Abstract
1421067 Coated products AMCHEM PRODUCTS INC 31 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 26015/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A heat transfer composition in pre-shaped taped form comprises a release sheet to which is strippably adhered a thermo-setting, plastic material, which comprises 15-16% by weight of one or more particulate solids having a thermal conductivity of at least 100 Btu/in/hr/sq. ft./‹F, dispersed in the thermo-setting plastic material, from 15-40% by weight of an epoxy resin, and from 1-15 parts by weight of a cross-linking agent per 100 part by weight of epoxy resin. Suitable particulate solids are metals such as copper, aluminium, iron and various steels, metal compounds such as zirconium carbides, and graphite. The particles may consist of various proportions of «relatively coarse» particles such as all the particles pass through 20 mesh but less than 25% through 200 mesh and «relatively fine» particles, that is in which more than 75% passed through 200 mesh. Relatively coarse particles preferably make up 5-40% by weight of the heat transfer material and the relatively fine particles 5-40% of the heat transfer material. The preferred crosslinking agent is dicyandiamide. A binder, e.g. a nitrile rubber, and a tackifier such as a polyalkene, e.g. polybutene, may also be present in the compositions. A thickener such as a fibrous material, e.g. asbestos fibre is also preferably included in the composition. The backing may be a commercially available release paper. An exemplified composition comprises 28.51 parts of an epoxy resin of epoxide equivalent 185- 195, obtained from epichlorhydrin and bisphenol A, 7.98 parts nitrile rubber crumbs, 16.45 parts electrode grade graphite (1% on 20 mesh, 20% through 200 mesh), 27.41 parts electrode grade graphite (1% on 100 mesh, 82% through 200 mesh), 12.72 two parts polybutene of molecular weight 1900-2500, 5.92 parts asbestos fibre and 1.10 parts dicyandiamide.
