Abstract

1421327 Fluid pressure braking systems; valves; actuators AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 28 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30576/72 Heading F2F A fluid pressure (conveniently hydraulic) braking system comprises a brake actuator 10 operable to move an actuating rod 11 to actuate a vehicle brake; the actuator 10 comprises three pistons 18, 22, 23 defining three enclosures 21, 24, 25 and the brake may be actuated by applying hydraulic pressure to enclosures 24 or 25 or by releasing pressure from enclosure 21 whereby a coil spring 31 acts to actuate the brake. Hydraulic pressure is fed to enclosure 25 during service braking when the pedal 58 of a service brake application control device 12 is depressed and pressure in the enclosure 25 acts to move the third piston 23 in the brake actuating direction and also acts in opposition to the spring 31 through the second piston 22 and the first piston 18. The pressure in enclosures 21 24 is controlled by a hand operated spool valve 38. The valve 38 has ports 46, 49 connected to a reservoir, ports 47, 48 connected to an accumulator and outlet ports 36, 37 connected respectively to enclosures 24, 21. In the inoperative position 55 of a hand lever 13 of the spool valve 38 ports 49, 36 are connected and ports 47, 37 are connected. When the vehicle is stopped temporarily the driver moves hand lever 13 to a central position so that liquid under pressure is now fed from the accumulator through the spool valve to the enclosure 24 as well as enclosure 21, and pistons 22, 23 are moved together in a brake actuating direction; and the brake is held actuated by holding of the hand lever 13 mechanically in the central position. Should the driver wish to apply the hand brake for parking, he moves the hand lever 13 to a third position 57 whereby ports 37, 36 are connected to the liquid reservoir to vent enclosures 21, 24. The coil spring 31 expands to move pistons 18, 22, 23 to apply the brake. The spring 31 acts on piston 18 via a probe 33 on a top hat section reaction member 32 and piston 18 acts on piston 22 via a plunger portion 19 passing through an aperture 20 in a wall 16 of a casing 14. The hand lever 13 connects with the spool 40 of the spool valve 38 by a plunger 44 spigoted into a bore 43 in the spool 40 and a spring 45 serves as a feel device for operation of the hand lever 13.
