Abstract

1432607 Automatic control of voltage R W BECKWITH 14 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 22822/73 Heading G3R An A.C. voltage regulator for an electrical distribution system sums a signal dependent upon the system voltage with two signals proportional to the system current, one in phase with, and the other phase shifted relative to, the current, and controls the voltage (e.g. by tap changing) if the summation is outside a selected range. As shown, the signals are obtained from transformers T4, T 1 and T 2 and summed with a reference value by operational amplifier Q 1 . This amplifier includes a diode D4 and feedback thermistor Rt I to provide a temperature independent half-wave rectifier, summer and line drop compensator. The output of amplifier Q 1 , which is proportional to the rms value of the sensed voltage, passes through a double-T filter and is compared in operational amplifiers Q3, Q4 with pre-set limits, set by potentiometers R28, R29 across a stabilized supply from voltage regulator Q2. If outside these limits, as indicated by light emitting diodes L 1 , L 2 , a timer T 10 including operational amplifier Q 6 is started to turn on transistors Q 8 , Q 1 0 . If the voltage is still outside the limits when the timer T 1 0 times out i.e. transistors Q 8 , Q 10 are turned off, the signal from operational amplifier Q3 or Q4 passes via Zener diodes D 11 or D 12 , turning on triacs Q 1 1 or Q 1 2 until the voltage falls within the pre-set limits. The triacs may control a motor driving a tap changing transformer, buck or boost autotransformer, induction voltage regulator or the field of an A.C. generator. The load may be an arc furnace.
