Abstract
1433196 Cartons; applying cutting strips; roll-holders CONTINENTAL CAN CO OF CANADA Ltd 21 June 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 29436/73 Headings B8P B8F and B8M A paperboard carton, which may hold material in roll form, is made from the blank shown in Fig. 7, and has a strip B of high impact polystyrene secured to the blank and forming a cutting edge. In an alternative embodiment, the strip B is secured to a flap 15 and projects slightly below the bottom wall 17 of the carton. The strip may be secured with a hot melt adhesive of the ethylene vinyl acetate type, and may have a serrated cutting edge. If the carton contains material in a sealed bag the strip B is used to open the bag. The strip B is fed from a roll 41 through a cutting device 42 where a fly cutter (52), Fig. 3, not shown) cuts teeth in the strip and then over a roller 65 which operates microswitches 66, 67 controlling the rate of feed. Subsequently the strip passes to an applicator 43 where it is severed into appropriate lengths and applied to a carton blank that has previosuly been supplied with adhesive. Alternatively adhesive may be applied to the strip B, The applicator includes a fixed block 70 carrying drive wheels 73, 74, a nip roller 74a, and a sliding block 81 carrying idle pressure rollers 82, 83. A piston and cylinder 93, 94 move the sliding block towards the fixed block to feed the strip B to the carton blank. When the sliding block is retracted a cutting edge 86 shears the strip against a block 75. Photo-electric cells sense the presence of a carton blank and by means of a fibre-optic device initiate the application of adhesive. A further fibre-optic device controls a valve which permits actuation of the piston and cylinder 93, 94.
