Abstract

1433239 Fluid logic elements KNORRBREMSE GmbH 22 Aug 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 39888/73 Heading G4P The element comprises a stack of plates of which one (main plate) is formed with channels and openings defining a main nozzle for forming a jet of fluid, a control nozzle for forming a control jet directed perpendicular to the main jet, and two channels to which the main jet can be directed by the control jet. Certain channels and openings in this plate communicate with a so-called key plate. The key plate has grooves on both sides of it, the grooves being interconnected by holes through the plate. The key plate is shown in top and bottom view and in section, in Figs. 3a-3c. Holes through the plate are shown at 41, 42, 47, 48, 53. Grooves of various widths are present as shown. The arrangement shown above centre line 46 is symmetrical about centre line 45, and that to the left of line 45 in Fig. 3a is symmetrical about line 46. As shown in the cross-section. Fig. 3c, grooves are interconnected by holes. The main plate may be as shown at the top of Fig. 4. Fluid presented to hole 65 is formed into a jet which is discharged via passage 75 or 76. The key plate is used in the orientation shown, with the shown sealing plates on each face. In operation fluid admitted at 65 passes to hole 41 as well as forming the main jet. From 41 the fluid flows via narrow passages 43, 49, acting as throttles, and passes out of hole 8311 in the outer sealing plate if this hole is unblocked. The flow of fluid over hole 47 results in suction being applied, via the groove on the reverse side of the key plate, to opening 83 in the control duct in the main plate. This ensures that the main jet flows to passage 75. If hole 83 in the outer sealing plate is now blocked, fluid passes in to the control duct via hole 47 so that the main jet is now deflected to the right-hand passage 76. The fluid element is therefore monostable. A second control input flow may be applied at hole 78 to provide OR/NOR operation. If the main plate is provided with two control ducts, oppositely directed, and the sealing plates with two blockable holes (83, 85), one associated with each control duct, a bistable element is formed (Fig. 5, not shown). In this arrangement the jet can be switched from one outlet passage to the other by blocking the appropriate one of the holes. In another arrangement (Fig. 6, not shown), the orientation of the key plate is changed so that hole 42 is aligned with holes 65, the operation of the element being similar to that described with reference to Fig. 4.
