Abstract
1438437 Braking yarn as it is unwound from a drum; knitting machines WESCO INDUSTRIES CORP 29 Nov 1974 [22 April 1974] 51866/74 Headings D1C D1E and D1J An arrangement for ‘braking yarn as it is withdrawn axially from a drum 12 comprises a coiled spring whose opposite ends have been secured to each other to form a continuous yarn retarding ring 16, the ring 16 having an inner contour that is smaller than the outer contour of the drum 12 before the ring 16 is mounted on the drum, the yarn wound on the drum being drawn off from between the spring and the drum and thence away through an axial bore in the drum. The drum 12 is fixed to a rotatable member 14 so that yarn can be wound onto the drum. By stretching the spring to cause it to embrace the drum the spring is subjected to a flattening action and this causes each coil thereof to be inclined with respect to the radius of the drum, the inclination being in the direction of relative rotation of the yarn as it is drawn off over-end from the drum. The spring 18 may be of steel and the portion of the drum 12 surrounded by the spring may be magnetized to retain the spring thereon and prevent axial displacement thereof thus dispensing with the need of a shoulder.
