Abstract
1439030 Bearings S M SHOBERT 3 Aug 1973 36969/73 Heading F2A A bearing member 10 has a surface 17 of a low friction fabric with a hard backing 12 of plastics material. The bearing surface is composed of cords 15, the strands 36 of which are of low friction fibrous material including a fluorocarbon, each cord having an irregular outer surface containing raised and depressed portions, the strands being woven together so as to locate the fibres in place, and the cords being interlaced into a woven fabric which thereby anchors the fibres against displacement. The fabric is embedded in the plastics material so that the cords and fibres are mechanically secured therein, with the fibres undulating throughout the length of the cords. Portions of the fibres are exposed through the plastics material to define the bearing surface, and other portions are fully embedded in the material which is not chemically or adhesively bonded to the fibres or cords. The low friction material is preferably PTFE and the backing may be a conventional glass-reinforced plastics. The bearing member may be made by forming a braided layer of low friction fibres on a mandrel, and then forming around these fibres a thicker braided layer of glass threads. The mandrel is then submerged in a bath of liquid polyester or epoxy resin so as to impregnate the threads and cords. On removal from the bath, the mandrel and impregnated fabric are placed in a heated curing mould. When the resin has hardened the mandrel is removed. If desired particles of PTFE may be added to the resin to improve the lubricity of the bearing. Strands of cotton may be included in the cords forming the bearing surface which improve the bonding between the fabric forming the bearing surface and the plastics material.
