Abstract

1439169 Associative memory systems HONEYWELL INFORMATION SYSTEMS ITALIA SpA 28 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55277/73 Heading G4A An associative memory comprises, for each bit of the stored data, a storage area having three sections m, n, p (Fig. 1), one of which p is always transparent and one of the other two being opaque in dependence on the value of the stored bit. The storage areas are on plates 32, 33, 34, there being one plate for each bit position, bits of a word being aligned, and the plates are interspaced with electro-optical shifting devices so that in dependence on the required content of a search word, a beam of radiation may be directed on to one or other of the areas m, n for a «0» or «1» respectively and on to the area p for immaterial values. Preferably a plurality of laser beams, one for each word position, are directed on to the plates, photodetectors 51 which correspond to stored words matching the interrogation word being illuminated. The electro-optical devices comprise polarizers 5, 7, 15, 17, 19, formed by potassium dideuterate phosphate which rotate the polarization plane by 90 degrees when voltages V 0 , V1 0 . V11 0 , V 1 , V1 1 . . . are applied and slabs of birefringent calcite crystal 6, 8, 9, 16, 18, 20 which shift suitably polarized light either vertically or horizontally. Switches permitting the application of the voltages to the polarizers are controlled by logic circuitry (Fig. 2, not shown) the circuitry for each bit position receiving an input signal W n-1 derived from the control signals of the preceeding stage (for example W1 = V 0 .V 1 +V 0 .V 1 ) and a signal m m , P n or n n . Modification.-The stored words may be examined sequentially in which case only a single photodetector is necessary. The density of the recorded information may be increased by having the three areas m, n, p vertically aligned (with p in the middle).
