Abstract
1439226 Optical scanning ZELLWEGER USTER Ltd 12 July 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 33181/73 Heading G2J An optical scanning arrangement for reading symbols e.g. prices or for stock control comprises a source e.g. laser 2 which produces a scanning beam 3, 12, 15 which falls on the symbol 19 from which a receiving beam 20-24 is returned to a photo-electric detector 27. The two beams 3, 12, 15 and 20-24 fall on spatially separated areas of optical elements (e.g. reflectors 10, 13) in their path to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. In the arrangement shown, light from laser 2 is focused by a cylindrical lens 4 and reflected by prism 7 before falling on area A of rotatable polygonal mirror 10 from which the scanning beam passes through a toroidal meniscus lens 22 and is reflected from area B of concave mirror 13 which focuses the beam on the character to be read at 19. The reflected beam falls on area C of mirror 13, passes through a further toroidal meniscus lens 14, is reflected from area D of the polygonal mirror 10 and is focused by cylindrical lens 25 and lens 26 on a photo-electric receiver 27. An additional plane reflector 17 and protective glass plate 30 may also be provided as shown.
