Abstract

1439227 Separation of iridium values SWARSAB MINING EXPLORATION & DEVELOPMENT CO (PTY) Ltd 27 July 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 35938/73 Heading C1A Iridium values are separated from platinum and optionally other platinum group metals and gold by converting to their lower oxidation states by treating with hydrogen peroxide in acid medium at a temperature above room temperature, adjusting the pH to 9 (stage 22) so that Au, Pd, Rh and Ru are precipitated, the iridium and platinum remaining in solution are then oxidized by sodium bromate in acid medium (stage 23) at a temperature above room temperature and the pH adjusted to 6À5-7À5 precipitating iridium hydroxide and leaving the platinum in solution. The iridium containing precipitate may be purified by dissolving in 50% hydrochloric acid, boiling, oxidizing with hydrogen peroxide (stage 25), adjusting to pH 9 with sodium hydroxide, filtering and precipitating iridium hydroxide by using formic acid. This may be ignited at 1000 C. (stage 28) and cooled in nitrogen giving metallic iridium. The original material may be the residue from an aqua regia leach performed on a mixture of platinum group metals and gold, e.g. a matte. The bulk of the rhodium may be removed before the peroxide treatment.
