Abstract

1439808 Guanidine carbonate; melamine CHEMIE LINZ AG 20 June 1973 [14 July 1972] 29412/73 Heading C2C Guanidine carbonate is obtained from an aqueous solution in which it is present in addition to urea, pyrolysis products of urea, ammonia and carbon dioxide by heating the solution at #80 C. and at atmospheric pressure (to expel the NH 3 and free C0 2 present) evaporating the resulting solution (which contains an amount of CO 2 equivalent to the guanidine content) at # 80 C. and #0À80 atmosphere absolute pressure until the solution after cooling to 20-30 C. is saturated with urea, separating the resulting solid precipitate (mainly melamine) and then suspending the mother liquor which remains in an amount of liquid ammonia which is at least twice (e.g. 2 to 4 times) the weight of urea present, the water content of the suspension not exceeding 20% by weight, and then separating off the guanidine carbonate which remains undissolved. A further evaporation may be effected on the solution immediately prior to the suspension in liquid ammonia also at #0À80 atmosphere absolute and #80 C. provided that, if the water content of the final concentrate is between 0 and 10% by weight, then the evaporation is carried out within 5 seconds, e.g. by spray drying. The treatment with liquid ammonia is generally effected at – 33 to + 20 C. and at 1 to 10 atmospheres absolute pressure. The examples describe the recovery of guanidine carbonate and melamine from mother liquors obtained in the manufacture of melamine from urea or cyanic acid and ammonia.
