Abstract

1441593 Heating and cooling printing cylinders STIBBE-MONK Ltd 16 July 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 37123/72 Heading B6C [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for heat treating a fabric 5, Fig. 5, comprises a rotatable roller 3, means for urging the fabric 5 against the roller 3, a heater 23 for evenly heating a section of the roller surface, a first sensor 8 for giving a response dependent upon the temperature of a first part of the section facing the fabric, a device for cooling a second part of the section adjacent or opposite an edge of the fabric, and a second sensor 17 or 18 for giving a response dependent upon the temperature of the second part, the arrangement being such that the cooling device and the heater can be operated so as to keep the temperature substantially constant across the width of the fabric. In a sublamatic printing machine 100, Figs. 1 and 2, a paper 106 printed with a dye pattern is unwound from a roll 104 to pass over a stationary heater 107 and a fabric 110 is unwound from a roll 108 to pass over a stationary heater 112. Printing is effected during passage around a rotatable steel calender roll 114 having internal electrical heaters 115 comprising a number of long electric filament heating rods extending across the roller 114 and shorter rods on each side of the roller. The fabric 110 and the paper 106 are urged into contact with the roller 114 by a pressure pad 116 comprising, in succession, an inner layer 25 of polytetrafluoroethylene-impregnated glass cloth, an optional felt layer, a resilient rubber layer 27, a layer of continuous steel plate and a layer 26 of circumferentially extending steel strips 122. All layers are secured to a bar 28 and all layers, except the layer 26, pass around a bar 29, the strips 122 being secured to the bar 29 by adjustable nuts 124. The bars 28, 29 are movable by rams 30, 31. A temperature control member 119 extends over an upper strip 118 of the roller 114 and is constructed and similarly to the temperature control member of Figs. 1 and 2. Take-up stations (not shown) for the fabric and paper are provided and there is a cooling device upstream of the fabric take-up station. In a modification, Fig. 3, the brackets 9, 10 are replaced by blocks 76 mounted one each side of the gauge 8 and which are slidable in a member 72 secured between plates 70. A sensor unit (not shown) is screwed into position below the member 72 between the plates 70. A further sensor unit 80 is secured to the blocks 76 which are provided with holes for allowing air to be directed downwardly through lower slots 74 in the member 72 on to the roller 3 or 114. Each sensor unit comprises a pick-up head 94 mounted in a casing 96, which head is spring urged into contact with the roller 3 or 114, and which transmits a signal corresponding to the sensed temperature to a control system. In modifications (not shown), instead of electrical heating, the roller is heated by hot oil circulation or hot gas or air circulation between an inner and outer wall of the roller or along tubes within the roller.
