Abstract

1442315 Tongs for suspending glass TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO Ltd 11 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 34702/73 Heading C1M Tongs for suspending glass sheets comprises an elongated suspension member, a pair of tong arms pivoted about a pivot mounted on the suspension member which tong arms extend beyond the pivot to form jaws, a tong link attached to one end of each arm the other end of each link being connected to a biasing member which in its rest position acts to close the jaws. The biasing member is preferably a weighted slider slidable about the suspension member. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the suspension member 2 is attached to a tong bar 4. A rocking frame 47 one end of which contacts a tong actuating member 60 pivots about a pin 51 mounted on the suspension member 2. Adjacent its other end the rooking frame has a pivot 46 which passes through straps 43 which are in turn connected to the slider 28 and its weight 37. Thus downward movement of the member 60 causes the slider to rise. Since tong links 24, 31 are pivoted about pivot 26 on the slider 28 the tong arms move outwards about link 8. In a second embodiment (Figs. 6. 7) the suspension member is supported by a tong gate comprising upper and lower supporting members pivoted about a rod 71, the rod 71 being attached to the tong bar 70. In this embodiment upward movement of the slider 120 is produced by movement of a cable 126. The other end of the cable is connected to a bell crank lever 159 one arm of which is acted on by a pusher rod 157. Fig. 10 illustrates the cable 140 which supports the tong bar 70 and by which: it may be raised and lowered. The tong bar usually cranes six pairs of tongs.
