Abstract

1445217 Gas-blast circuit breaker contacts SIEMENS AG 25 July 1974 [2 Aug 1973] 33010/74 Heading H1N A fixed, hollow contact for a gas-blast circuit breaker comprises a ring or tube 3 of conductive material, e.g. cold-hardened copper or a copper alloy, supporting a circular nozzle 7 of a material, such as graphite, having a conductivity less than that of the ring or tube but which increases when the material is subjected to pressure, the external diameter D1 being greater than that of the ring or tube D2 where the transition from one to the other takes place along the outer surface. The increase in diameter should be at least 0À2 mm., preferably 0À4 to 0À8 mm. Thus a moving contact, such as a tulip contact, engaging the outer surface, will exert increased contact pressure on the nozzle at the moment of transition and so lessen the likelihood of arcing at that junction due to a voltage jump during a contact separating operation. A circuit breaker may comprise a pair of such contacts co-operating with a moving bridging contact in a gas-blast breaker in a break chamber of porcelain filled with SF 6 .
