Abstract
1447206 Film-forming compositions DULUX AUSTRALIA Ltd 30 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 4099/75 Heading C3P A liquid film-forming composition is prepared by (a) coreacting a mixture of at least two unsaturated monomers containing 10-19% of acrylonitrile and a solution in a hydrocarbon liquid of aniline point 35-45 C. of a 60-70% oil length drying or semi-drying oil-modified alkyd resin comprising 1-4% of itaconic acid in amounts such that the alkyd forms 35-55% of the monomer/alkyd mixture at 100-135 C. in the presence of free-radical initiator which is not a peroxide or hydroperoxide, (b) diluting with a second hydrocarbon liquid so that the mixture has an aniline point of 40-50 C., (c) cooling quickly at a rate such that there is formed a stable dispersion of polymer particles not greater than 2 microns in size. The initiator is preferably azobisisolbutyronitrile and commercial solvents are used in the examples. The monomer mixture used was styrene, butyl acylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile. The product is compounded into an enamel.
