1447459 Sintered steel bonded titanium carbide CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 10 Oct 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 43956/74 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered steel bonded TiC composition formed of primary TiC grains average size < 5 microns dispersed in a steel matrix containing an austenitic decomposition product contains 0À25- 2 wt. per cent of VC, TaC and/or NbC as a grain growth inhibitor. The composition preferably contains 15-60 wt. per cent TiC and is made by compacting and liquid phase sintering a powder mixture of TiC steel and TaC and/or NbC. The preferred steel matrix contains in wt. per cent (a) 1-6 Cr, up to 6 Mo, up to 2Ni up to 2V, up to 3Co, 0À3-0À8C and balance Fe, (b) 6-12 Cr, 0À5-5 Mo, 0À6-1À2 C, up to 5 W, up to 2 V up to 3 Ni up to 5 Co and balance Fe (c) 10-30 Ni, 0À2-9 Ti, up to 5 Al, Ti and Al # 9, < 0.15 C, up to 25 Co, up to 10 Mo balance at least 50 Fe. The powder mixture is compacted and sintered in vacuum e.g. at 1450C. After annealing to form spheroidite the compact can be heattreated and quenched to form martensite. The sintered and heat-treated compacts are used as "apex seals" in rotary combustion engines e.g. the Wankel engine.
