Abstract
1447463 Cooling dynamoelectric machines SIEMENS AG 15 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 7080/74 Heading H2A In a machine wherein a stator winding 9 is surrounded by an unslotted stator core 8 and has an aperture at one end of sufficient diameter to allow a rotor 1 to be withdrawn therethrough, e.g. for servicing, the winding 9 is provided with thermally insulating material at its inner surface and is embedded in a material which is of greater thermal conductivity than the insulating material. In the high speed permanent magnet D.C. motor shown, the winding 9 is bell shaped and has had plastics material poured about it to make it rigid, and it supports at its inner surface an insulating layer 10, e.g. of asbestos. Thus, owing to the greater conductivity of the plastics material, any heat which is dissipated in the winding 9 tends to transfer radially outwards through the machine towards a cooling duct 7 in the machine casing 6, through which cooling liquid flows. In an alternative arrangement (not illustrated), the layer 10 is omitted and the winding 9 is embedded in plastics material with which has been mixed a substance of high conductivity, e.g. metal powder, the concentration of the conductive substance being greater on the outside of the winding than on the inside. Such a concentration variation may be provided by rotating the winding as the plastics material and the conductive substance are poured thereon, centrifugal effects producing the desired result. The motors may have static electronic commutation (not detailed).
