1447814 Quadraphonic decoders; gain control SANSUI ELECTRIC CO Ltd 15 Aug 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 36034/74 Heading H4R In a 2-4 quadraphonic decoder in which the matrix coefficients are automatically varied according to the instantaneous amplitude relationship between the directional components in the two composite input signals, the decoded front and rear channel pairs are fed to respective mixers 48, 49 which only mix the low frequency components (i.e. <500 Hz) without significantly affecting the high frequency components. For low frequencies the front mixer outputs correspond to the sum of the composite input signals and the rear mixer outputs to the difference. The provision of the mixers is tantamount to fixing the coefficients f=b=0 and l=r= 1 in the decoder of Specification 1,434,471. (Fig. 1). In Fig. 4, at low frequencies the capacitive impedances are high and mixing occurs via R12, R13 whereas at higher frequencies the mixing path R12, C12 provides an attenuating low pass filter. The high frequency level is reduced by 6 dB to produce a flat response by R12 in combination with the output impedance of the decoder. The circuit admits of integration and may alternatively be composed of integrated differential amplifiers. Variable gain amplifiers performing the function of the above coefficients consist of a gate-controlled FET (Q2, Fig. 2, not shown) shunting an emitter current source (60) so that low frequency gain is zero but high frequency gain is RC limited.
