Abstract
1448054 Aerials THOMSON-CSF 28 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 13825/74 Heading H4A A three-dimensional radar aerial which is rotatable in azimuth comprises a first feed means producing a main beam which effects a high speed scanning of space in elevation, and a second feed means operating independently of the first feed means and producing at the aperture of the aerial a secondary beam occupying a predetermined extent in elevation, in which it carries out surveillance. As described, the first feed means comprises a Robinson type aerial in which two parallel trapezoidal plates 4, 5 are so formed together as to provide a circular feed ring 3 at one end and a linear aperture at the other end. Rotation of a feed horn 2 in front of the ring 3 produces a linear displacement of the apparent source at the linear aperture, said linear aperture being extended by a flared horn 6 to a radiating aperture 60 in front of which is located a reflector 7 having an elliptical-paraboloidal surface. With the linear aperture of the Robinson type aerial vertically disposed, the radiated waves are horizontally polarized. The secondary beam is produced by a vertically disposed array of slots 9 in one wall 10 of the flared horn 6 leading to the radiating aperture 60. The array of slots is fed by means of a rectangular waveguide 8, which is supplied at one end 11 and is terminated at the other end 12 by an absorbent load 13. The radiated waves from the array of slots 9 are vertically polarized, and their entry into the Robinson type aerial is prevented by means of a vertically disposed reflecting plate 14 in the central plane of the linear aperture thereof. Matching members may also be inserted in the horn 6. The secondary beam may be of pencil shape or, by suitably designing the array of slots, it may be given a special shape, such as cosec
