Abstract

1456876 Glass fibres NIPPON ASBESTOS CO Ltd 25 July 1974 [27 July 1973 (2)] 32817/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division C3] Glass fibres having protuberances on their surfaces are produced by partially melting a glassforming particulate mass so that some particles of low fusibility remain unmelted, and forming the partially molten mass by blowing or spinning, into fibres having surface protuberances comprising the unmelted components of said mass. The protuberances may comprise unmelted alumina, zircon sand, zirconia or diaspore. Preferably 5-25 parts by weight of such difficultly fusible material (e.g. of approx. particle size 40-550 Ám) are used per 100 parts of fusible components, so as to give fibres in which the protuberances occupy 0À1-3% of the fibre volume. The fibres may be used to reinforce gypsum or concrete compositions (5-15 parts by weight of fibres to 95- 85 parts of gypsum of concrete) or calcium silicate or magnesium carbonate compositions (5-30 parts by weight of fibres to 95-70 parts of calcium silicate or magnesium carbonate). In an example, a fibre consisting of (by weight) SiO 2 42%, Al 2 O 3 14%, MgO 23À5%, ZrO 2 13À5%, B 2 O 3 5% and Na 2 O 2%, and including unmelted zircon sand, was prepared; and in a further example 10 parts by weight of alumina added to 100 parts by weight of a mixture, of weight composition SiO 2 36%, Al 2 O 3 15À5%, MgO 6À8%, CaO 38À6%, Fe 2 O 3 0À7%, MnO 1À9% and Na 2 O 0À5%, and the product formed into fibres.
