1459764 Valves NORBRO PNEUMATICS Ltd 7 Feb 1974 [20 March 1973 17 Oct 1973] 13262/73 Heading F2V A valve comprises a landed spool 15 slidable axially in a cylindrical body 1 containing annular elastomeric lip seals 8, 9 &c. spaced axially by apertured rings 7 having annular extensions 60. In the case of the five port valve shown, spool 15 comprises three main lands 16, 17, 18 separated by intermediate lands 19, 20. The latter define annular grooves 21 to 24 communicating with radial passages 40 opening into opposed axially extending bores 30, 31 separated by a dividing wall formed by land 17 or a plug. Bores 30, 31 respectively contain plugs 34, 35 and possibly centralizing springs. Thus, when spool 15 is displaced from its neutral position shown the flow from inlet port 3 to one or other of the working ports 5, 6 passes through passages 40 in the spool, rather than over the spool, thus reducing erosion of lip seals 8, 9, &c. The drain fluid similarly flows through the spool to ports 2 or 4. During the displaced condition of spool 15 intermediate lands 19, 20 provide support for the adjacent lip seals. The latter may be impregnated with a solid lubricant such as molybdenum disulphide. The spool may be actuated by pilot air supplied to chambers or pistons at the ends of the spool, mechanically or by solenoids. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the valve has only three ports.
