Abstract

1462123 Thermally insulated pipes FOUNDATION WESTERN Ltd and CRYOGENIC INDUSTRIES Ltd [trading as FOUNDATION CRYOGENIC JOINT VENTURE] 9 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 20405/74 Heading F2P A pipe-line for transporting liquids at cryogenic or elevated temperatures comprises concentric inner pipes 12 and outer pipes 14 which define an annular space therebetween and has stress-transmitting couplings 16 located in the annular space at intervals to secure the pipes 12, 14 together, one of the pipes being prestressed in tension or compression so that the couplings respectively induce a compressive or tensile stress in the other pipe such as to resist expansion or contraction of the said one pipe resulting from a temperature difference between the two pipes. The two pipes are thermally insulated from one another by insulation material 50 and U-shaped insulation means 32 fitted at one or both connections between the two pipes 12, 14 and the stress couplings 16 which may for example be conical, with or without cut-out portions 62 or may comprise a plurality of rods. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, the pipe-line comprises modular elements 101. The outer pipe 14 may be formed of mild steel or prestressed reinforced concrete and the inner pipe 12 is preferably made of nickel steels, e.g. 3%, 5%, 9%. The stress couplings 16 are also preferably made of nickel steels or stainless steels. Insulation material 50 may be, for example, expanded polystyrene or polyurethane and the insulating member 32 may be made of polytetrafluoroethylene or similar plastics material.
