Abstract

1462631 Lamp failure alarms LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 15 Jan 1974 [3 March 1973] 10453/73 Heading G4N [Also in Division F2] A tractor-trailer vehicle, including a warning system, e.g. of vehicle lamp or brake pressure failure, comprises a first unit 10 mounted on the tractor, a second unit 11 mounted on the trailer and including first and second switches 20 or 34, 41 operable in response to at least two trailer conditions, respectively, for providing an electrical signal over line 12 to the first unit which includes an arrangement 83, 84; 99, 88 to provide an indication of the nature of the condition. In the trailer unit, transistor 20 or 34 is rendered non-conductive by the failure of one of tail lamps connected at 17, 18 or one of brake lamps at 32 to cause the signal on line 12 to be reduced. This in turn causes transistors 76, 83 to be turned on for energizing a lamp failure warning light at 84. If the pressure of brake fluid falls on the trailer, e.g. due to a fracture in the supply line, a switch 41 closes reducing the potential on line 12 to zero. This causes transistor 83 to be turned on, energizing the light at 84. In addition, a transistor 93 coupled to line 12 turns off and transistor 99 is turned on to energize a buzzer or a brake pressure warning light connected at 88. Failure of side, tail lamps connected at 45, 46 on the tractor or of brake lamps 60, 61 on the tractor is also indicated by the light 84. The warning light at 84 is also energized if any light supply fails. The warning lights at 84, 88 may be checked by applying a positive signal at 100. In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the switches coupling the lamps, brake line switch to the separate warning lights are connected in different configurations.
