1462756 Filter thickener and elements therein ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN CO Ltd 3 June 1974 [5 March 1973] 10615/73 Heading B1D A filter element comprises an open-ended support tube 1, of rigid P.V.C. for example, having an internal chamber 3 which is sealed from the main interior space of the tube and so arranged that when the tube is lowered into a suspension air can be displaced from the interior space by-passing the chamber 3, cham- ber 3 communicating via holes 7 with a drainage space defined between the exterior of tube 1 and a surrounding filter sleeve (10). The sleeve (10) is of circularly woven cotton, nylon, polypropylene or polyethylene terphthalate, and its ends are clamped to tube 1 by rubber cuffs (12) and hose clips (Fig. 2 not shown). Sleeve (10) is spaced from tube 1 either by a pattern of ribs, studs or roughening produced by shot blasting on tube 1 or by a coarsely woven backing layer (9) of metal or plastics. In Fig. 7 chamer 3 is annular and connected by a flexible tube 38 to a manifold 39, which supports a row of elements by brackets 42. Figs. 9, 10 illustrate a manifold which supports several rows of elements and comprises two. perforated sheets connected by sleeves 50 through which filter elements 33 extend, tubes 38 connecting the chamber 3 of each element with the enclosed filtrate space between the sheets 47, 48. Figs. 1 to 6 (not shown) illustrate various filter elements with chambers 3 of different forms to Fig. 7. Fig. 8 (not shown) represents a thickener tank with two sumps and several rows of filter elements, connected by manifolds to a common pump which is reversed to backwash elements to remove cake. As the filtrate spaces within the elements are small little liquid is used in backwashing.
