Abstract

1466659 Tube IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1974 [27 Oct 1973] 20153/73 Heading F2P A flexible tube, capable of being converted to a rigid tube comprises a flexible cylinder impregnated with at least one polymerizable material and at least one photosensitive catalyst. When subject to suitable radiation (e.g. ultraviolet radiation or visible light), the photosensitive catalyst is activated and the polymerizable material is polymerized thus converting the flexible tube to a rigid one. The flexible cylinder may have a woven or knitted structure or may be made from a felt or mat of fibrous material such as glass fibre; asbestos fibre or fibres of organic materials. The polymerizable material may be an epoxy resin or an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and the latter may be mixed with a polymeric material to increase its viscosity. The photosensitive catalyst may be a uranyl salt, a photosensitive dye or said catalyst may comprise a mixture of at least one photosensitizer and at least one reducing agent capable of reducing the photosensitizer when it is in an excited state. Further examples of suitable catalysts, together with examples of polymerizable and polymeric materials suitable for impregnating the flexible cylinder are disclosed in the Specification. The flexible tube may also include at least one thermally activatable free radical generator. The flexible cylinder may be impregnated by being passed through a bath containing the polymerizable material or a solution thereof or the flexible cylinder may be sprayed. The polymerizable material or solution thereof may contain the photosensitive catalyst. The flexible tube may be used to form a rigid tube or to form a liner in or on a part of an existing tube so as to seal a leak in an existing tube.
