Abstract

1466737 Making electrical cable; drawing LES CABLES DE LYON 24 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 18020/74 Headings B3A and B3P [Also in Division C7] A method of making an electrical cable 1 formed of a conductive core, a layer of insulating mineral material around the core and an external sheath of iron alloy, comprises subjecting the cable to successive steps of annealing the sheath at a first temperature, annealing the core at a second temperature lower than the first and tempering the sheath and core. In between drawing stages the cable 1 passes into a furnace 2, which comprises a muffle 7 surrounded by an induction heater 8, where the temperature of the sheath, which is of stainless steel, is quickly raised to 900-1000 C. while the insulating material keeps the core temperature down to about 300 C. as the cable leaves the furnace. The cable then enters a muffle 11 where the sheath temperature falls slowly as it heats the core, which reaches 600 C. as the cable emerges from the muffle. A reducing gas is fed through a tube 12 into the muffles 11, 7 and it is burnt where it leaves the latter. The cable then enters a tempering enclosure 4 where the sheath temperature falls rapidly while that of the core falls more slowly. An ejector is fitted to each end of the enclosure 4 to provide a controlled flow of coolant, which enters through pipes 13, 14 and leaves the housing through a pipe 15.
