Abstract

1466768 Determining water content of oil R M H CMELIK 13 May 1974 35705/74 Heading G1N In an apparatus for determining the water content of oil in pipes the variation in capacity of a probe through which the mixture flows and to which a high frequency signal is applied is monitored and the resultant signals transmitted along a cable connected to the probe at a lower frequency. In use the probe is lowered down an oil well on the end of the cable and comprises a housing containing the electrical equipment and which is extended at its lower end by a cylindrical outer electrode. A brass foil cylindrical electrode is mounted co-axially within the outer electrode and is protected by an insulating cover. Channels are provided in the outer electrode to allow the oil-water mixture to flow between the electrodes. A squarewave signal at a frequency greater than 100 KHz is applied to a voltage divider including a reference capacitor and the electrodes and the voltage developed across the electrodes is applied via a diode detector to a voltage to frequency converter. The latter includes a common collector transistor connected as a variable current drain for the emitter capacitance of a unijunction transistor connected as a low frequency relaxation oscillator. Thus the frequency of the oscillator varies in accordance with the capacity of the probe which depends upon the amount of water in the oil i.e., from 1 to 3 KHz. After amplification the signal is passed along the cable to the surface.
