Abstract

1467035 Missile launching from beneath the surface of water; missiles MESSERSCHMITT BOLKOW BLOHM GmbH 20 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 22501/74 Headings F3C and F3A The launching of a missile from beneath the surface of water is effected following the detection of sonar signals from a target. In an embodiment a helicopter 1 is moving above the surface 2 of the water and has either lowered a sonar device 4 or dropped a sonar buoy 41 into the water. Data obtained by the device 4 is passed to the helicopter via a cable 5 or radio. A submarine 3 which is totally submerged has a sonar signal receiver 6 and a missile-launching tube 7 the latter contains a missile 8 having a homing head 9 provided thereon. In use the detecting of a target causes the missile 8 to be launched from the tube 7. The missile moves vertically out of the water and, having been set in rotation about its longitudinal axis, uses the homing head to scan the horizon for the helicopter. When the missile is at the required height its direction is changed the head 9 is released and homes on the target.
