Abstract

1467372 Stop motions for knitting machines M PHILIP 27 Feb 1974 [16 March 1973 5 Feb 1974] 8953/74 Heading D1C A stop motion assembly for a knitting machine is mounted to sense yarn tension between guides G1, G2, Fig. 1, and comprises a housing with chambers 2, 3, 4 containing, respectively, a spiral spring tape 37, a catch and a switch. The tape is wound round an arbor 28, Fig. 3, locked against rotation by a nut 33 and securing the tape inner end. The tape free end 40 projects through a slot 36 in the chamber and carries a holder 41. With ceramic yarn guides 53, and movable between an inoperative position (full lines) and a position (phantom lines) towards a base line joining guides G1, G2. In use, supply yarn Y passes through guides G1, both guides 53 and then guide G3. An arm 47 on the holder co-operaates with the slot 36 to form a stop in the upper position of the tape during normal operation of the machine. The retracting force applied by the tape, which may be of spring steel strips, strand or wire, is adjustable by means of arbor 28. The number of coils remains constant during extension and retraction of the tape, and the extent of extension is limited by contraction of the coils. Movement of the holder from the inoperative position before a predetermined tension is reached is prevented by a catch 59 pivotable in chamber 3 against an adjustable spring 75 and engaging the holder with a nose portion 62 which projects through a slot 70 in the chamber. A yarn sensor 99 pivoted in the switch chamber 4 has its free end 103, Fig. 2, bent in U-form to contact yarn between guides 53. Within the chamber the part 100 of the sensor carries contact 113 which engages fixed contact 97 when the sensor is in the lowest position 99A, thereby to actuate the machine stop motion control circuit and also to illuminate bulb 84 providing a visual signal. The sensor will move to position 99A if the yarn breaks or if the yarn tension rises excessively to pull holder 41 sufficiently far from its inoperative position. The holder is capable of a long travel, so that, if yarn tension rises, the machine can be halted before the yarn breaks. After stopping and correction of the fault causing the excessive tension, holder 41 is restored to its inoperative position and the machine restarted. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the stop motion circuit switch is incorporated in catch chamber 3.
