Abstract
1467478 Microcapsules FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 17 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 31764/74 Heading B8C [Also in Division C3] Microcapsules having hydrophobic liquid cores are produced by: (1) emulsifying, in a continuous phase comprising a hydrophilic liquid, a hydrophobic liquid having dissolved therein an organic compound, (ii) introducing into the continuous phase all the ingredients necessary to form a resin, (iii) forming a resin wall about the droplets of emulsified hydrophobic liquid from said ingredients, wherein said organic compound forms a covalent bond with at least one of said ingredients under conditions in which said resin is formed. The ingredients necessary to form a resin are a combination of an amine and an epoxy resin, an amine and an aldehyde, a urea resin and an aldehyde, a urea resin and an amine, a melamine resin and an amine, or a melamine resin and an aldehyde. The ingredients may suitably be a self-polymerizable urea resin or a self-polymerizable melamine resin. The organic compound may be an isocyanate, an amine, an epoxide, an acid chloride, a chloroformate or an aldehyde. The hydrophobic liquid is a natural or synthetic oil. In the examples (1) a solution of a hydrophobic liquid, isopropyl naphthalene, has dissolved therein tolylene diisocyanate, and the resulting solution is emulsified in water, the droplers so formed then being encapsulated in a resin formed by polymerizing formaldehyde with an adduct of acrylonitrile and 3,9-bisaminopropyl – 2,4,8,10 – tetraoxaspiro – [5,5]- undecane, (2) an adduct of trimethylolpropane and hexamethylene diisocyanate is dissolved in a perfume oil as a hydrophobic liquid, the resulting solution is then emulsified in water and the droplets so formed encapsulated in a resin formed by polymerizing polyethylene imine with glyoxal, (3) phthalaldehyde is dissolved in diethyl diphenyl ethane as a hydrophobic liquid, the resulting solution is then emulsified and the droplets encapsulated in a resin formed by polymerizing an epoxy polyurea polyamide co-condensed resin with an adduct of acrylonitrile and 3,9-bis-aminopropyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro – [5,5] – undecane, and (4) phenylenediamine is dissolved in toluene as a hydrophobic liquid, the resulting solution is then emulsified and the droplets so formed encapsulated in a resin formed by the polymerization of a melamine-formaldehyde resin.
