Abstract

1467681 Gas turbine plant VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHE WERKE-FOKKER GmbH 20 May 1974 [19 May 1973 22 March 1974 28 March 1974] 22392/74 Heading F1G The invention relates to an aircraft having a gas turbine propulsion engine and an auxiliary gas turbine engine which is utilized for starting the main engine, and which is arranged to drive a set of auxiliary apparatus and an air conditioning unit comprising a compressor, an expansion turbine and a blower, air from the compressor of the air conditioning unit being utilized to start the main engine. The main engine is shown at I and an auxiliary engine at 2, the auxiliary engine comprising a compressor, combustion equipment and a turbine and being connected to drive through a gear assembly 3, an electric generator 4, hydraulic pumps 5 and 6, a fuel pump 7, and a shaft 10. The shaft 10 is connected to drive a compressor 11 of an air conditioning unit 17 which comprises also an expansion turbine 12 and a blower 13 both mounted on the shaft 10. To start the main engine 1, the auxiliary engine is started and the compressor 11 is thereby driven. Air from the compressor passes through lines 16, 21 and 19 and is utilized to start the engine either by impingement on the turbine blades or by driving a starter turbine. Air from the compressor may also be utilized in the air conditioning plant, being passed through the air cooler 14 then expanded in the turbine 12 finally discharging through line 21 to the point of use. The air cooler 14 is cooled by means of air supplied by the blower 13. Alternatively, air taken from the compressor of the main engine 1 through line 18 may be passed through line 21 to the air cooler 14 of the air conditioning plant. Air taken from the compressor of the main engine through line 18 may also be passed direct to the combustion section of the auxiliary gas turbine engine 2, or to the compressor thereof as indicated by line 20. The assemblies 8 of adjacent units each comprising the gear assembly 3, generator 4, hydraulic pumps 5, 6 and fuel pump 7, may be connected together by shaft 9. The assembly comprises also an emergency unit 27 which comprises a monofuel combustion chamber and gas turbine unit 28, an air turbine 29, and an electric generator 30 and hydraulic pump 31 driven thereby; the turbine 29 may be driven by air taken from the compressor of the main engine 1 through lines 18 and 22; the monofuel may be hydrazine.
