Abstract
147,505. Columbia Graphophone Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Burroughs, C. F.). Feb. 7, 1918, [Convention date]. Stationary – mould machines; heating and cooling moulds; pressing plungers and dies; moulding phonograph records.-A press for moulding disks &c. from plastic material comprises a fixed base a<3> supporting the lower matrix a’ through members a<2>, a, and formed with a piston extension d on which slides a cylinder d<1> formed with a cross-piece d<2> provided with studs h on which are journaled arms g carrying the press head B supporting the upper matrix b<1>. In the open position, the cylinder d’ is supported by a small hydraulic piston l under constant pressure through a pipe l<2>, and the head B can be swung aside to an extent limited by a crossbar g<1> by admitting pressure to a cylinder m furnished with a piston connected to a carriage n<1> coupled to the arms g by links p<1>. The head B may also be turned by gearing G, H’, J to bring the upper matrix into an accessible position for cleaning &c., the head being locked in its operative position by a spring stud J<1> on the crank arm J. Upon opening the cylinder m to exhaust, constant pressure through a pipe m<4> returns the carriage n<1> and brings the arms g into a vertical position against stops i. Pressure is then admitted to the cylinder d<1> through a valve k<1> and pipe k to depress the head Band mould the article, registration of the matrices being ensured by pins e on the bend entering sockets on the member a. Should the valve k<1> be inadvertently opened, a stream of water is directed towards the. operator through a pipe z<5> supplied through a pipe k<3> and valve z<4> which is normally held open by a weighted lever o<5> but is closed by a stop o<3> on the carriage n<1> engaging a lever o<4>. The matrices are heated and cooled by steam and water supplied through duplex valves controlled by the movement of the arms g, steam being supplied whilst the press is open and water being supplied as the press is closed. The valves are controlled by a lever I, connected to a link s having a slotted portion embracing a pin s<1> on one arm g, and furnished with a portion z’ connected to a dash-pot device t<1>. When the press is open the device t’ is held up by a latch w<1> which is tripped, to cut off the steam and open the water supply, by a member w<2> engaging a lever x. The moulded article is detached from the upper matrix by a member z, carried by a rod z<1> which is depressed by a lever z<3>, rod z<4>, and catch z<5> engaging beneath the member a as the head B rises; and is ejected from the lower matrix by a member y carried by a member y<2> which is raised by the cylinder d<1> through rods y<4> and a yoke y<3>. The ejector y is provided with a spring-pressed spindle w<5> to form a central perforation in the article. The matrices are detachably secured to mould-blocks c, c’ by clamps c’ secured by screws e<2>.
