Abstract
1479357 Coated products DAYCO CORP 11 June 1975 [6 Sept 1974] 25068/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A laminated printing blanket comprises at least one fabric base ply, a surface layer adapted to receive printing ink and a compressible intermediate layer, the intermediate layer comprising an elastomeric matrix having interconnected cavities distributed therethrough, the cavities comprising from more than 40% to 75% of the volume of the intermediate layer. The blanket may be produced by spreading a layer 15 of elastomeric matrix material containing particles of hydrated magnesium sulphate on to a woven fabric base ply 14, curing the matrix so that water of crystallization is liberated from the hydrated magnesium sulphate to form interconnecting passages between the particles, leaching the particles from the matrix to create cavities, rinsing, drying, bonding a fabric layer 17 to the microporous layer so produced by means of adhesive 16, bonding a second fabric base ply 12 to fabric ply 14 by means of adhesive 13, applying a surface layer 18 of elastomeric material to the exposed surface of fabric ply 17 e.g. by spreading, and curing, e.g. at about 290C. The fabric plies may be of cotton, rayon, glass or polyester fibres, the adhesives may comprise neoprene and elastomeric layers 15 and 18 may comprise natural rubber or butadiene-acrylonitrile, neoprene, polysulphide or polyurethane elastomers. Curing of elastomeric layer 15 may be effected by exposure to a temperature of about 290F and leaching effected in hot or cold water. Curing and leaching may be effected in a single step using water at a temperature of 150F to 212F. Drying may be effected at 300-350F for less than three hours using hot coils of a spreading machine, an oven, radiant heat or hot air blowers.
