1479464 Gas discharge display panels; cathode materials PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 37146/74 Heading H1D Prior to assembling a gas discharge display panel by sealing together an insulating baseplate 1 and an insulating transparent top plate 2 supporting chromium alloy cathodes 4 and anodes 3 respectively, at least the active surfaces of the cathodes 4 are coated with a metal layer whose thickness is sufficient to prevent the formation of chromium oxide during heating of the plates upon assembly of the panel, and which metal oxidizes less rapidly than chromium or the oxide of which sputters more rapidly in a gas discharge than chromium oxide. Suitable metals are Pt with a thickness of 0À04 Á, Ni or Al with a thickness of 1 to 20 Á, Au and Ag. Ni and Al may oxidize when sealing the plates 1 and 2 together by melting sealing glass 8, but such oxides can be removed by sputtering, the remaining Ni or Al forming a suitable cathode surface, Au and Ag are less suitable since they have to be provided in thicker layers which must be sputtered entirely owing to their influence on the discharge. The electrodes 3 and 4 which may be an alloy of 47À5% by weight Ni, 47À5% Fe and 5% Cr are sealed in channels 6 in the plates 2 and 1 respectively.
