Abstract
1479668 Automatic control of rolling mills ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO KK 27 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 28689/74 Heading G3R The system for adjusting the gap of a rolling mill to compensate for the magnitude and angular position of eccentricity of the rolls is modified to allow for the effect of slip between the upper and lower rolls. Slip is determined in an arithmetic unit 9 from the difference between counters 5, 6 of pulses from generators 3, 4 coupled to upper and lower back-up rolls 1, 2 and is used to correct, at 25, the output of an arithmetic unit 22 according to given mathematical formulae. The unit 22 solves two equations relating the magnitude of roll pressure variations, measured at 10, with the sine and cosine of the instantaneous angle of the upper roll 1 relative to a datum. These values are produced once per revolution in a first unit 20 and are averaged over several revolutions at 22, provided a gate 21 is open due to the pressure being such as to indicate the presence of metal between the rolls. Units 20, 22 operate digitally on signals obtained by rapid sampling of the analogue output of pressure transducer 10. The output of 25 is connected to a computer 27 which calculates the positonal adjustments necessary to compensate for eccentricity, the computer signals being converted to analogue form at 16 for addition to actual and desired position signals in a hydraulic positioning servosystem 11 … 15.
