Abstract

1479697 Production of preplasticized vinyl or vinylidene halide polymers B F GOODRICH CO 28 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973 1 April 1974] 37519/74 Heading C3P A process for forming preplasticized vinyl-, or vinylidene halide homo- or copolymers comprises forming a monomer premix by mixing the monomer or monomers to be polymerized, a plasticizer for the finished polymer in an amount 5-100 parts by weight of plasticizer based on 100 parts by weight of monomer and the aqueous reaction medium, homogenizing the premix to form an emulsion in which the solids have a particle size of 0À5-15 microns, passing the homogenized premix to a reaction zone, emulsion polymerizing the homogenized premix in the presence of a suitable catalyst therefor and at a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the polymer being produced, and thereafter recovering the plasticized vinyl resin. Conventional plasticizers may be used, e.g. phosphates and phthalates. Further plasticizer may be incorporated in the vinyl polymer product. The aqueous medium usually contains an emulsifier, e.g. in an amount up to 6% by weight of the monomer charge, and it may be added either prior to polymerization, e.g. when the premix is homogenized, or during the reaction. Temperatures of polymerization in the range 15-75 C. are preferred. Freeradical initiators may be used to initiate the polymerization process. Any convenient means of homogenization may be used. The pH of the reaction system may be adjusted by the use of ammonium hydroxide. In the specific examples a pre-mix of vinyl chloride and dioctyl phthalate at various pHs (3À3, 7À1, 11À3) is homogenized and then polymerized using batch polymerization and proportioning the premixes containing as emulsifier: sodium lauryl sulphate, dodecyl benzene sodium sulphonate, and lauryl alcohol.
