Abstract

1479853 Forming coloured glass PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 19 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 6914/75 Heading ClM Continuous sheets of glass are formed on the surface of a molten metal bath in an enclosed chamber, the glass comprising a reducible metal oxide imparting colour to the glass, and the chamber having an atmosphere comprising a gas inert to the other materials in the chamber and sufficient oxygen substantially to prevent reduction of the oxide to metal. The gas is preferably N 2 comprising less than 0À01% O 2 (by volume), and preferably contains less than 0À1% of H 2 . The reducible oxide in the glass may be nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, copper oxide and/or silver oxide. Examples of glasses are given. The glass is preferably delivered on to molten tin-containing metal at less than 2050 F. A reducing gas (e.g. H 2 ) may be periodically injected into the chamber to reverse any oxidation of tin, the supply of oxidizing gas then being resumed.
