Abstract

1481701 Thrust link; cam GIRLING Ltd 4 Nov 1974 [2 Nov 1973] 51085/73 Heading F2K To prevent uneven loading, due to manufacturing tolerances, in a thrust device for a spreading disc brake in which two parallel and axially aligned thrust plates 1 are located between rotatable friction discs (not shown) which are urged into engagement with stationary surfaces (not shown) by axial separation of the two plates 1 by axial thrust produced by relative angular movement between the two plates 1 such that rollers 5 (or balls Fig. 7, not shown) ride up cam ramps 6 on a ring of ramp members 7, each ring carried in a recess 2 in the plates 1, to generate the axial thrust load, permanently deformable means are provided between each ramp member 7 and its thrust plate 1 and so arranged as to allow each ramp member 7 under working loads to adjust its position in a substantially axial direction so as to share the axial load evenly between the rollers 5 (or balls) during subsequent actuations of the thrust device whereby manufacturing inaccuracies and tolerances of the plates 1, rollers 5 and ramp members 7 are accommodated by this initial bedding in of the plates 1 and ramp members 7 to subsequently permanently provide an even load distribution throughout the camming rollers 5 for future operation of the thrust device. As shown the underside of each ramp member 7 is formed with two spaced apart projections 9. Ramp members 7 are of hardened or case hardened steel whereas the surface 10 of the thrust plate 1 with which the projections 9 engage is of a softer material. After initial assembly of the thrust device and during the initial actuations thereof, any unequal axial loads exerted by the individual rollers 5 resulting from manufacturing tolerances in the ramp members 7 and thrust plates 1, will be smoothed out as the excess load on some of the ramp members 7 causes their projections 9 to dig into the surface 10 to permanently deform the surface 10 to provide an even load distribution throughout the rollers 5 of the thrust device.
