Abstract
1481955 Cleaning sugar cane F W McCONNEL Ltd 13 Aug 1974 [11 Sept 1973 11 June 1974] 42595/73 and 25899/74 Heading A1F Sugar cane lying in a swath is fed by rotating sweeps 78 tops first up a ramp 23 to a conveyer 27 which accelerates the cane from the smath across a gap 25 whereby trash either remains in the swath or falls down through the gap. Rollers 28 press the canes onto the conveyer 27 as they are elevated to a nip 30 between rotating elements 38 (Fig. 6) each formed from two strips of flexible belting backed by polyurethane foam 40 in opposed quadrants. The lower part of bin 36 is formed in two pivoted parts for discharge of the canes. The sweeps 78 are mounted on two rotating drums 49 to be pivotable in a vertical direction, being biassed upwardly by springs 71. Alternatively the sweeps may be biassed downwardly by the use of rubber bushes which replace the bearings supporting shafts 70. The weight of the machine is taken, on roller 26 but may be counterbalanced by springs. Abutment of pivot 47 with pad 91 limits upward movement of the machine front. The ramp 23 may be extended forwardly under sweeps 78 to close gap 25 if the canes are fed in base first. In this case the conveyer 27 is omitted.
