Abstract

1486890 Iron oxide catalyst IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Dec 1974 [12 Sept 1973 28 Nov 1973] 42881/73 and 55082/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] The hydrogenation of adiponitrile to hexamethylenediamine is catalysed by a catalyst which consists of fused, solidified iron oxide particles containing not less than 96À5% iron oxide and having a O : Fe atomic ratio of 1À2-1À4 : 1 which have been activated by heating in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature of 200-600‹ C. The fused particles preferably contain not less than 97À5% iron oxide and have an O : Fe ratio in the range 1À3-1À39 and especially 1À33-1À37 : 1. The oxide is preferably substantially free from haematite and has a spinel structure. The composition may be obtained by fusing an iron oxide or mixture of iron oxides or a mixture of an iron oxide and metallic iron. The fused iron oxide is suitably crushed to a size of 5-16 BSS mesh and activated by hydrogen until at least 85%, preferably at least 95% of the available oxygen has been removed. The activating hydrogen suitably contains 0À25- 25% volume NH 3 and less than 1% vol. of water is conducted at a pressure of 1-15 atmospheres and 250-500‹ C. over the oxide at a rate of at least 7À5 ml/min/g. of oxide.
