Abstract
1487272 Discharge tubes RCA CORPORATION 29 Jan 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 3946/75 Heading H1D A method of devacuating to atmospheric pressure an evacuated electron tube-e.g. a cathode-ray tube requiring regunning-includes the step of directing a pulsed beam of radiant energy-as described, a laser beam-upon an area of the tube neck which has a portion of the gun mounting assembly spaced by not more than 250 m. from its inner wall, until a crater is formed and the glass material at the bottom of the crater is swept into the envelope. The volatilized material condenses on the adjacent mounting structure instead of being swept into the remainder of the tube; the neck is thereafter severed and, with the contained mounting assembly, discarded. In an example, 40 to 50 pulses of 1À2 to 2À2 joules, applied in 30 seconds, are employed.
