Abstract
1487515 Engine turning gear BHSBAYERISCHE BERG HUTTEN-UND SALZWERKE AG 6 Feb 1975 [6 Feb 1974] 5113/75 Heading F1K Apparatus for turning the rotor of a prime mover comprises a motor driven pinion 6 biased towards an operative position in which it engages a gear 9 on the shaft of the prime mover, the pinion being movable to and lockable in an inoperative position out of engagement with the gear when the gear is rotated by the prime mover but being arranged to be released to return to its operative position to drive the gear when the speed of rotation of the gear falls to a predetermined value. As shown the pinion is locked in the inoperative position by means of a magnetically controlled pawl 8. The apparatus includes a speed recorder 16 for sensing the speed of the gear 9, the recorder being arranged to operate the magnet to move the pawl in the direction to unlock the pinion when the speed of rotation of the gear falls to a predetermined value. The prime mover can be started up from a stationary condition e.g. by manual actuation by an operator or by a standstill controller. Alternatively the turning apparatus can be started while the rotor of the prime mover is running down. Automatic starting while the rotor is running down is effected with the aid of speed recorders 16 and 18. Speed recorders of electrical or mechanical design can be utilized.
