Abstract
1487705 Supercharged four-stroke diesel engines SOC ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES DE MULHOUSE 27 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 3467/75 Heading F1B The exhaust valves of a diesel engine 1 are kept open for 85 to 150 degrees of the induction stroke and the exhaust back pressure is increased by a valve 3 in the exhaust pipe so that exhaust gases are drawn back into the cylinders. The valve 3 may be controlled in accordance with the fuel supply and intake air temperature and/or exhaust temperature and the flow of intake air may be controlled by a valve 7. The lift of the exhaust valves may be less than the full lift over their open period at the end of the exhaust stroke and during the induction stroke, Fig. 4 (not shown). The exhaust gases in the exhaust manifold may be heated by a heating resistance prior to and for a period after starting or heated air may be supplied to the manifold or to the exhaust pipe 2 between the valve 3 and the turbine 4 of the turbocharger 4, 5. Examples of timing of the opening of the exhaust valves and opening and closing of the inlet valves are given in the Specification and compression ratios of 7, 8 or 12 and supercharging ratios of 3, 5 or 6 are described.
