Abstract

1501123 Surface wave delay lines HEWLETTPACKARD CO 14 Feb 1975 [24 June 1974] 6409/75 Heading H3U A surface wave delay line comprises a plurality of delay paths on a single substrate, the paths being arranged on surface regions having different crystallographic orientations so as to extend the substantially constant portion of the phase shift against ambient temperature characteristic. The delay line may be used in the feed back loop of an amplifier to provide a frequency-stable oscillator. In a first embodiment, Fig. 5, the delay path formed by interdigital transducers 52a, 52b on surface 11 is coupled via intermediate amplifier 55 to a delay path formed by transducers 54a, 54b on surface 13, amplifier 56 being the oscillator amplifier. Alternatively the delay paths may be coupled via a curved end face of the substrate (Fig. 6, not shown). In a final embodiment, Fig. 7, three delay paths on relatively inclined surfaces 71, 72, 73 are cascaded via intermediate amplifiers 77, 79. In a modification these amplifiers may be omitted and direct connections made between transducers 74A and 76A, and 76B and 78B. Also, it is envisaged that surfaces 71, 72, 73 might be combined into a single curved surface.
