Abstract

1501347 Ziegler catalyst components WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 12 May 1976 [12 May 1975 26 Feb 1976 (2)] 19603/76 Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] Polymerisation catalysts comprise an alkylaluminium compound and a component prepared by reacting metallic magnesium with at least 2 moles of allyl chloride and with 1.75-3 moles of a dialkyl ether at 30-100C, ageing the solid formed for at least 10 hours at 30-140C and either simultaneously or subsequently reacting the solid with at least 0.2 moles of a dialkyl sulphite, reacting the solid formed for 1-25 hours at -20 -140C with 0.5 to 10 moles of TiCl x (OR) n wherein R is a hydrocarbon or a halogenohydrocarbon radical, x is 2-4, y is 0-2 and x + y=4, and isolating the solid so formed from the reaction mixture, all the proportions being referred to 1 gram-atom of Mg. The titanium compound may be TiCl 4 , a mixture of TiCl 4 and Ti(OR) 4 used together or sequentially or a reaction product of TiCl 4 and an epoxide which may be prepared in situ. Preferably excess organic reactants and organic byproducts are removed by washing with a hydrocarbon solvent and/or by distillation at one or more stages in the preparation of the component which is finally suspended in a (chloro) hydrocarbon for use. The alkylaluminium compound may be added to the suspension to activate the catalyst before the monomer is contacted therewith or the two components can be added separately to the monomer.
