Abstract

1503101 Benzoxazole – styryl derivatives CIBA-GEIGY AG 9 March 1976 [11 March 1974] 09405/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of general Formula I wherein rings A, B, C, D can carry non-chromophoric substituents. Such compounds may be made (a) by reacting a methyl compound (VII) with a Schiff’s base (VIII) where Ar is an aromatic radical in dimethylformamide in the presence of a strongly basic alkali metal compound; (b) by reacting (VII) with an aldehyde (XVII) in the presence of a catalyst that splits off water, or in a high boiling solvent in the presence of a condensation catalyst with simultaneous removal of water; or (c) by reacting of a compound of Formula (XX) where A 1 is one of and D 1 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, with an aldehyde (XVII). In the examples, substituents on ring A are methyl, t-butyl, phenyl, cyclohexyl, methoxy, cumyl, methylsulphonyl, #-cyanoethyl, Cl, CH 2 OCO-, and NaSO 3 -, and another phenyl ring may be fused on to A; Cl or phenyl may be present as substituent on ring B, and methylsulphonyl on ring D. The syntheses of some precursors of Formula (XVII), and of 2- methyl – benzoxazole – 5 – propionitrile (of Formula VII) are described. The compounds of Formula I are of use as optical brighteners.
