Abstract

1506107 Lamps on vehicle doors J M C MONTIBUS 13 April 1976 [29 Sept 1975] 14950/76 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] A device for indicating to other road users that the door of a vehicle is open comprises a lamp which is intermittently illuminated whilst the door is being opened and a lamp which is steadily illuminated when the door is fully open. The door may carry a single yellow lamp at its outer edge to give both indications and may also carry at its lower edge a white lamp to illuminate the ground adjacent the door. The illumination may be controlled by a device Fig. 2, mounted inside the door 2 and comprising a tubular case 4 carrying a spring loaded contact maker 18 and a contact member 5 slidable axially within the case 4 against the action of a return spring 13. The member 5 consists of a cylindrical plastics body 6 carrying a series of brass collars 7 of equal thickness and a longer end collar 8, all the collars being in electrical contact with a lead 10 secured to the vehicle body so that when the door is opened the lead pulls the member 5 through the case 4 to bring the collars into successive engagement with the contact maker 18. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the contact member has the form of a steel strip (27) wound at one end on a spiral return spring (28) in a plastics casing (30), insulating strips 32 of plastics material being fixed to the steel strip at regular intervals.
