Abstract

1506527 Motor vehicle suspensions CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 14 July 1975 [12 July 1974] 29504/75 Heading B7D In a strut-type suspension for a steerable wheel 1 of a motor vehicle, the upper end of a suspension strut 3 is connected to a vehicle body 4 by a resilient mounting 5 which is arranged to be sufficiently yielding under lateral forces acting thereon to allow changes in vertical forces at the wheel 1 to produce changes in camber angle so that tendencies to wheel skimming resulting from the wheel 1 being out of round or unbalanced or due to the wheel rolling over a hump can be fully counteracted by gyroscopic forces resulting from the changes in the camber of the wheel. The resilient mounting 5 includes a rubber ring 51 which is bonded to support plates 57, 58 fixed to the strut 3 and body 4 respectively and has a wall thickness smaller than its height. Stops 54, 55 are arranged to co-operate with the rubber ring 51 to limit lateral deflection of the upper end of the strut. The rubber ring 51 is aligned so that its central axis A passes through the intersection of the midplane B of the wheel 1 and the axis C of a control arm 2 connected to the lower end of the strut. The invention may be applied to a double wishbone suspension.
