Abstract

1506641 Making electrical leads SHIN MEIWA INDUSTRY CO Ltd 14 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974 18 Sept 1974] 6469/75 Headings B3A and B3W [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for cutting insulated wire into predetermined lengths and presenting one end of each length to a processing station comprises cutting means 3, including wire cutters actuated in intervals between wire feed steps of said predetermined length and insulation cutters downstream of the wire cutters and also acting between feed steps, and transfer means 6, which includes grippers 7 for moving cut lengths 32 transversely of the initial feed direction, the transfer means being displaceable in said feed direction when a gripper is holding a length 32 to strip the cut insulation from the length 32 whereafter the grippers are moved in steps equal to the distance between adjacent grippers, the transfer means being returned for the next gripper to grip the next cut length 32. Preferably wires 5 are fed from two reels 2 through the cutter by a movable clamp 4 and the wire cutter has an insulation cutter upstream of it also. The jaws 19, 20 of the gripper adjacent the cutting means are closed on to the wires 5 by a solenoid-operated lever 53, Fig. 9, before the cutters are actuated. Pivoting of the transfer means about a pivot (11), Fig. 13 (not shown), by means of a cylinder (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), removes the insulation from the rear ends of the cut lengths 32. The grippers 7 are mounted on an endless chain 13 intermittently driven, in timed relation to the wire stripping operation via a one-revolution clutch, and moved one step while the transfer means is in its displaced, broken line position, Fig. 3, to position the next gripper to receive the next lengths of wire fed by the clamp 4. The cut lengths 32 are transferred by the grippers 7 to crimping stations 41, 42, one for each wire. An upper limb 59 of a guide 58, Fig. 1, has a hook 59a for holding back the upper length while the lower length moves along lower limb 60 for a terminal 43 to be crimped to it. Opposite each station a gripper is located at a fixed distance from a terminal 43 by a fixed guide (39) and spring-loaded guide (40), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). Stopping of the gripper 7 actuates a clamp 69 to hold the lower length aligned with the crimping means. The next gripper feed step moves the wires into a guide 63, the lower wire being held back by a roller (68), Fig. 18 (not shown), while a terminal 43 is crimped to the upper wire length. At the end of the upper run of the chain 13 a pin 51 on a lever 50 opens the gripper 7 to discharge the wire lengths each with a terminal crimped to it, into a pan 52. Instead of, or in addition to, the crimping stations, means for solder plating the stripped wire ends may be provided between two gripper stop positions.
