Abstract

1511832 Plasma arc furnace TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 30 April 1975 [7 May 1974] 20160/74 Heading H5H The disclosure is similar to that of Specifications 1,390,351, 1,390,352 and 1,390,353, but the orbiting electrode 3 is mounted with its longitudinal axis offset from the orbital axis 8 and with its arcing tip directed inwardly towards the stationary electrode 2 so that when electrode 3 is orbited rapidly enough a radially expanded plasma arc column 6 which has a frusto-conical portion whose base is adjacent the orbital path of the electrode 3 is formed. This enables particulate material to be introduced into the plasma column through a central bowl shaped plasma free region 7 formed at the upper end of the plasma column 6 without impinging on the electrode 3. This is in contrast with the method of introducing particulate material as cylindrical curtain about the orbiting electrode to the plasma column as disclosed in the above mentioned Specifications. The orbiting electrode 3 can be consumable, non-consumable or a plasma gun. Three axially adjustable orbital electrodes may be provided. Secondary feedstock may be introduced to the plasma column 6, which is of the form of two cones whose apices engage, at the point of maximum energy, by way of three ducts 9. The ducts 9 or separate ducts could remove gaseous effluents.
